Common Skin Reaction

Stinging or Burning

I feel stinging, tingling, or a burning sensation when I apply a product.

Stinging or Burning

Why This Happens

A brief tingling when applying active ingredients (especially acids, clay, or spot treatments) is common. This usually means the product is working on active breakouts or congested pores. However, persistent burning or sharp pain is different from mild tingling and should be taken seriously.

Normal — No Action Needed

  • Mild tingling that fades within 1–2 minutes
  • Slight warmth on actively inflamed breakouts
  • Tingling only on areas where product is applied
!

Warning — Take Action

  • Sharp, painful burning that doesn't fade within 5 minutes
  • Burning accompanied by visible swelling or hives
  • Pain spreading beyond the application area
  • Burning sensation on every application, not just the first few

What to Do

1

If it burns painfully, rinse the product off immediately with cool water

2

Pause the product for 48 hours and try again with a smaller amount

3

Ensure skin is not freshly exfoliated or compromised before applying actives

4

Avoid layering multiple acids or actives at the same time

5

Apply actives to fully dry skin — wet skin increases penetration and may cause more stinging

When to Stop and Seek Help

If burning is severe, produces swelling, or happens every time you apply the product, discontinue use entirely. Apply a simple moisturizer, avoid all actives, and consult a dermatologist if symptoms persist beyond 48 hours.
